Event Summary
Extreme weather events pose a challenge to our infrastructures, our economies and, in part, our to livelihoods. In recent decades, an increase in such events has been observed. Society and politics have to take these dangers on board, support awareness building and address strategies towards resilience.
Heavy precipitation, in particular, can have dramatic impacts. Reports on destroyed agricultural land and subsequently resulting local floods or landslides causing destroyed houses and roads have become almost commonplace. Related to these events, a few questions are still insufficiently being addressed in Austria: What are the experiences of those who have been directly involved or affected? What does science say about this topic? Where are the most pressing needs for action in the country? How in particular can the members of the Austrian Platform of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (ASDR Platform) help?
These questions will be addressed at the Austrian Understanding Risk (URAT) event
“Heavy Rain – What to do: Before, During and After: The effects of heavy rain events and the resulting need for action at the local level”.
Workshops, lectures, interviews and a marketplace will showcase the services and knowledge of actors in the natural hazards and disaster (risk) management as well as climate change adaptation sectors with an Austrian perspective and, above all, provide a framework for an active exchange of all participants.

In the framework of the URAT 2019 event, the Worldbank organizes a special workshop on “Sustainable and climate resilient cities“. This Workshop is on invitation only. The World Bank’s City Resilience Program (CRP) will be presented and interactively discussed with Austrian city representatives. The CRP aims to better prepare cities worldwide to the negative impacts of climate change. For this purpose, the CRP directly addresses the interaction between risks and urban development. The programme provides targeted support to cities to develop a range of investments in sustainability and climate resilience and to expand the financing options available to cities. By taking proactive investments in natural hazard and disaster risk management as well as climate change adaptation cities can both reduce related risks and foster opportunities for social and economic growth and, thus improving living conditions.
