Description
Does society really understand the risks and potential impacts associated with El Niño and La Niña? This session addressed major misconceptions around these large-scale climate events, including the common belief that El Niño and La Niña pose greater risk for major disasters worldwide. In this session, several climate forecasting institutes engaged each other in a controversial Map Slam, first pitching the risk information that is available about El Niño and La Niña and engaging each other on how risks can be best represented to decision makers. This was followed by an interactive Peer Learning Conversation, in which risk modelers and risk managers discussed what levels of risk trigger what actions, which risks are least understood, and what could be done to address this in the coming seasons.
