Cloud to Street is the leading flood mapping platform designed to protect the world’s most climate-vulnerable communities. By harnessing global satellites, advanced science, and community intelligence, we monitor worldwide floods in near real-time and remotely analyze local flood exposure at a click of a button. Our mission is to ensure that all vulnerable governments finally access the high quality information they need to prepare for and respond to increasing catastrophes. Founded by two women at Yale and seeded by Google, Cloud to Street is or has been used by governments across 15 countries. We are on track to enable new flood protection and insurance for 10 million people in the next 5 years.
We are looking for a creative project manager with a scientific or technical background to deliver impact for our government and humanitarian users through disaster risk reduction. You should apply if you want to ensure that the latest scientific and technical advances around catastrophic flooding will be made available to the most vulnerable communities on the planet. In this role, you will take ownership of Cloud to Street’s data delivery process, managing a team dedicated to understanding and providing useful insights for end users in humanitarian agencies and developing country governments. You will work with a team of scientists, engineers, and designers with expertise in satellite remote sensing, hydrology, climate, social vulnerability, UX, and machine learning to i) translate scientific data to enable decision-making on the ground, ii) customize the delivery of data and insights based on user needs, and iii) streamline and scale the delivery process to improve the lives of more and more end users.
Primary Responsibilities
- Support the use of Cloud to Street flood analytics products by government, engineering and humanitarian professionals
- Project-manage up to 10+ simultaneous deployments of the product by prioritizing user needs
- Manage a team of remote sensing scientists and communications experts through scheduling timelines of work for projects (e.g., data creation, training schedules, impact estimation)
- Perform custom user experiments to test design, tech, or scientific hypotheses on improving user uptake of disaster analytics
- Translate user needs into product development priorities for the science and technical teams
- Work with the sales team to scope the feasibility of projects in new locations
- Report directly to the co-founder and CEO
Characteristics of a Successful Candidate
- 2+ years of project management experience
- 2+ years of technical remote sensing, geospatial statistics or GIS experience/education
- BS or MS (MS preferred) in a related field, or equivalent experience
- Creative problem solver with an analytical mindset, the ability to speak the language of data, and an empathy for understanding the motivations of government and humanitarian end users
- Excellent communicator, especially of technical or scientific concepts, with the ability to tailor information to the decision-maker as well as to technical staff
- Passion for serving the most vulnerable through the dissemination of science and technology
- Flexibility for travel 20% time and comfortability working in different time zones
- Extremely organized and detail oriented
Useful Experience
- Past domain experience with any of the following:
- Disaster preparedness or response, ideally around flooding
- Working directly with low- and middle-income country governments
- Working directly with humanitarian agencies such as the U.N. or World Bank
- Past scientific experience with any of the following:
- Satellite remote sensing
- Hydrology or climatology
- Impact or disaster damage assessment
- Past technical experience with any of the following:
- Google Earth Engine (Javascript and Python APIs)
- Web interfaces built using Angular CLI, HTML and CSS
- Cloud and high performance computing for big or near real-time data analysis
- Our ideal candidate brings all three of the above domains of expertise to the team, but we expect that most candidates will have related experiences in only two of three
