Reporting on the UNISDR/GA SE Asian Regional Workshop on Structural Vulnerability Models for the GAR Global Risk Assessment, 11–14 November, 2013, Geoscience Australia, Canberra, Australia

This is a report on the South-East Asian Regional Workshop on Structural Vulnerability Models for the Global Risk Assessment on Disaster Risk Reduction (GAR), which was organised by Geoscience Australia and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction the 11-14 November 2013 in Canberra, Australia.

The following are some of the recommendations made by regional experts at the workshop:

  • There is a need for improved exposure information feeding into the multi-hazard research in GAR.
  • The paucity of empirical damage and loss data for the Pacific and South East Asian region needs to be  addressed through systematic post-disaster survey activity and insurance industry engagement.
  • The mapping of resistance levels for each building type to country building stock, using country development level as the proxy, could be greatly improved.
