Risk-informed development planning in Bangladesh

| Although Bangladesh has made significant progress in disaster risk management, the country is still at risk of growing loss and damage due to disaster and climate stresses. Limitations are found in incorporating disaster and climate change risks in all stages of development planning. In this context, the National Resilience Programme (NRP) is designed to provide strategic support to public and private sector for building resilience in line with Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the SDGs in coordination with four key government agencies of Bangladesh. The Programming Division part is establishing risk information platform and developing ex-ante disaster impact assessment tool for disaster and climate change risk screening of Annual Development Programme. In addition, the Programming Division is providing support to private sector in developing strategies for supply chain resilience, piloting business continuity plan and generating knowledge capital for resilient business practices in the country. This demand-driven programme is building on and strengthening existing government and private sector mechanisms through strong partnership with bi-lateral development partners and UNDP. It is expected that the National Resilience Programme will promote long-term sustainability as well as national and local ownership of programme interventions and gender responsive resilience more broadly. This event will share lessons as well as best practices on mainstreaming disaster and climate risks into national development planning process, could be beneficial for other developing/LDC countries. |
