Harnessing the evolution of earth observations and risk

Harnessing the evolution of earth observations and risk

Interactive workshop

identify · use · data · risk assessment · risk communication · earth observations

Our global community now has less than a decade to reach the Targets laid out by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The EO community can play a pivotal role, but only if tangible solutions are implemented that translate data to informed decision-making and investment through improved understanding of disaster risk. This workshop aims to identify some of those solutions in the context of the Sendai Priorities for Action. The workshop will have three segments that align with this year’s UR2020 temporal theme.
Part 1.
IGNITE-Style Presentations: Past.
A series of talks will highlight accomplishments that have successfully leveraged EO to promote effective DRR planning. IGNITE-style talks are a fast moving (<5 minutes/talk), innovative science communication medium. These talks will educate and engage the audience, laying a foundation for the conversation to come.
Part 2.
Panel Session:
Present.
A panel of subject matter experts carefully selected to represent the three primary EO communities: EO Data Providers (national governments and commercial sector), Big Data Distributors/Hosts (Amazon, Google, Microsoft, etc.), and End Users (elected decision-makers, re/insurance industry, humanitarian community, citizens).
This moderated panel discussion will establish where we are now from both technical and practical perspectives.
Part 3.
Thematic Breakout Groups: Future.
A number of breakout groups will be organized based on audience size, with each group asked to focus on either Priority 1 or 3 of the four Sendai Framework Priorities for Action:• Understanding disaster risk (Integration of hazard, vulnerability, exposure information)• Investing in disaster risk reduction for resilience (EO informing better investment moving forward)Participants will self-organize based on experience and interest. Google Forms utilized to provide targeted questions and each group will have a provided rapporteur. Breakout group direction: Define what success means to you in 2030 in the context of your Priority for Action. Identification, discussion and documentation of tangible actions over the next decade that would achieve this success in terms of EO integration into relevant disaster risk activities.Facilitators will bring the groups back together and lead a discussion highlighting group findings to the audience. Group discussion and output will be documented and compiled into a report that will help inform future priorities of the partner organizations.

Organizer: David Green, NASA

Partner Organizations: Group on Earth Observations (GEO), Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) Working Group Disasters, Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre, SE Asia Volcano Observatory, SERVIR, World Bank, Sentinel Asia, Global Flood Partnership
