Free, up-to-date maps are a critical resource when relief organizations are responding to disasters or political crises. When major disaster strikes anywhere in the world, HOT rallies a huge network of volunteers to map affected areas and provide data that enable responders to reach those in need.
Even more importantly, HOT assists international organizations as well as governments and first responders to map vulnerable areas before disasters occur. HOT uses a participatory approach to develop maps together with at-risk communities as part of long-term, disaster risk reduction projects in partnership with international donors. These projects emphasize local ownership of open map data and encourage communities to take a leading role in their own development. HOT also develops several open source software applications to leverage collaborative mapping and the use of new technologies in the field of geographic information for humanitarian aid.
